The most common condition treated by orthodontists is malocclusion and improper tooth alignment.
Malocclusion is a misalignment of the teeth when the jaws close. It begins to form during childhood. However, we usually pay no attention to this issue because it seemingly causes no pain and may not be visually noticeable. It is important to understand that malocclusion can lead to various health problems.
The consequences of malocclusion can be quite serious. Improper tooth alignment can lead to gum inflammation. Additionally, tooth enamel wears down faster, and oral hygiene becomes more complicated, resulting in tooth decay.
Severe cases can cause headaches and discomfort in the shoulders and neck due to overstrained jaw muscles.
Chewing may also become difficult due to disrupted contact between teeth. This can contribute to stomach issues as poorly chewed food enters the digestive system.
Malocclusion may lead to breathing, swallowing, and speech dysfunctions. It also increases the frequency of ENT disorders.
We provide orthodontic treatment at any age using intraoral appliances, braces, aligners, and plates. After proper diagnostics and calculations, the doctor will select an individual treatment plan tailored to your needs, efficiency, aesthetics, and budget.
Before orthodontic treatment, we perform the following diagnostics:
- The doctor deciphers the OPG (orthopantomogram), essentially a panoramic dental X-ray;
- Analyzes the CEPH (lateral cephalometric X-ray);
- Takes dental impressions of both jaws to create a 3D model;
- Photo diagnostics and, occasionally, video diagnostics.
During the initial examination, the doctor can make a preliminary diagnosis, provide recommendations for treatment preparation, and give the patient an approximate cost estimate. Specific forecasts, timelines, and costs will only be determined after a final diagnosis is made.
Orthodontic treatment can be preventive or appliance-based. In some cases, especially in childhood, special exercises or gymnastics may suffice.
Tooth movement is associated with the application of certain forces. In orthodontics, both mechanical force (screws, springs, elastic archwires, rubber ligatures) and functional force (actions of facial and chewing muscles) can be used.
Mechanical orthodontic appliances can be removable or fixed.
Removable orthodontic appliances:
- Plates with arches, screws, and springs
- Twin Block appliance
- Retention aligner
- EasyAlign aligner
- Single- and double-jaw plates
- Tongue crib
Fixed orthodontic appliances:
- Extrusion appliances
- Braces (bracket systems)
- Palatal and lingual arches
- Marco Rosso appliance
- Quad Helix
- Lil-Bumper
- Narces appliance
- Nanda appliance
- McNamara appliance and others
Tooth movement usually takes little time, but the restructuring of the entire dentoalveolar system as a whole takes longer.
To prevent tooth row deformation from returning due to long-standing chewing or speech habits, the retention phase (keeping teeth in the correct position) is crucial.
Retention appliances are worn by the patient to consolidate the achieved results. These can be the same devices used during treatment but without regular adjustments, or specially made aligners and retainers.
